We are delighted to announce our first release, I Am STILL a Girl: Whimsical Poetry About Serious Girlology, by Alice Engel.
A note from the author:
I believe passionately that girlhood and womanhood are not costumes that can be put on or taken off. No girl is defined by her hair, make-up, clothing, or interests, and no amount of mimicking these things can make someone into a girl.
There is much confusion and conflict in the realm of gender of late, and I think it stems from the way our culture has conflated personality with gender. My book addresses this in a way that I hope is no-nonsense, applicable to all, and joyful. My message to child readers is this:
1. Girlhood runs deep and is deeply biological—it doesn't ever change.
2. There is never a wrong way to be a girl.
3. Being a girl means being part of a strong and brilliant global sisterhood.
4. No other girl is exactly like you—you are WEIRD and that's okay!
Thank you for helping me to spread this message in a culture where children are constantly being told the opposite—that biology doesn't matter; that if you don't fit the mold of girlhood you might be a boy; that each person is on an isolated journey of victimhood and that you can only find connection with other victims; that girlhood is a specific aesthetic that can be mastered.
Thank you for helping me to tell children the truth.
XX,
Alice
